House Update with the 2012 Color of the Year . . .

Did you know that every year Pantone picks a color of the year? The color choice is a prediction of what trends are going to be happening in fashion, paint and home decor. They didn't have a color of the year in 1988 but I am going to guess it would have been mauve, or baby blue. Nothing was allowed in my high school bedroom unless it was one of those two colors - remember mauve? My sister had mauve carpet, mauve paint and a mauve bedspread - she was committed.

So what is the 2012 Pantone color of the year? Drumroll please ...

That's right folks, Tangerine Tango (I have a client who redid her master bedroom last year and incorporated this color in her pillows and it looks beautiful and very "now"). According to Pantone it is "a spirited reddish orange, that continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward." I doubt it will do all that but I do know that as a homeowner it is important to keep up on what the color trends are.

Why does the color of the year matter to you? It helps you make forward thinking, on trend decisions when it is time to repaint, or buy a new pillow. When it comes time to sell your home you will be glad you updated regularly, rather than having to do it all at once in order to get top dollar for your home.

I am not suggesting you should have painted your house the 2010 color of the year:
Or that in 2011 you should have painted your house this Pantone color of the year:
In fact I would never suggest any of these colors as a base paint color. But using these colors in a pillow, a lamp or a throw helps keep your house feeling updated and NEWER. When a house looks updated from the outside prospective buyers assume that hidden systems of the house (plumbing, electrical etc.) are also updated and well taken care of. I've shown homes built in 1963 that look like they were brand new and I've shown homes built in 1993 that look stuck in time (hunter green walls anyone?)

What do you think of Tangerine Tango? Would you use it in your home?

  1. Well, tangerine tango IS very cheerful, It would be would great in a room for my husband, it would match his hair - or at least the color his hair used to be. But since he's such a Ute fan, I guess we'll stick with my favorite accent color - RED! I do want to be up to date. So will you tell the Pantone guys to pick RED for 2013? Suzan

  2. I'm loving the tangerine!! Using it as an accent color really makes a room pop and adds an element of that fun, modern feel without losing the sophistication. I would definitely use this in my home.
